Wanna Buy a Dream?..

Joe enters his newly rented room

NARRATOR:
"Well. It’s a room anyway Joe. Better than a tent.
But there’s the minor complication of the rent.
Take inventory son:
Assets: none
Liabilities: none
Prospects: none
Well, that’s the list.
Wait! There's one asset you missed –
The paternal watch that ticks away your life minute by minute."

Joe gets out an old-fashioned watch and looks sadly at the photograph of a girl in the fob

NARRATOR:
"Look! There’s a liability in it –
The dream girl. She resigned from the dream – why not?
She wasn’t so dumb –
You are a self appointed bum.
Hey look here!
Are you shedding an old fashioned tear?
You don’t cry nowadays.
You live or die nowadays.
Things could be be tougher –
And after all, an artist has to suffer.
I guess it must be a grain of Italian dust left over from your last campaign
Or put it down to eyestrain."

Joe takes a mirror down from the wall and looks at his reflection

NARRATOR:
"Look at yourself - you’re all mixed up
Snap out of it. Get yourself fixed up
Even if poets misbehave,
They always remember to shave."

Joe suddenly sees the image of the girl within the reflection of his eye’s pupil

NARRATOR:
"Say, what’s the matter Joe?
Something gone wrong?
Is your head on wrong?

No! It’s terrific! Here’s something on which you can really pride yourself
You’ve discovered that you can look inside yourself
You know what that means? - You’re promoted
You’re no longer a bum. You’re an artist!
Remember a poem you once read?
“The eye is a camera” it said
Suppose like a film it could retain
The images that glide so secretly through your brain
Have you ever tried to see the shadow world inside photographed by the retina and held suspended in its memories?

This is one of the more unusual talents – and it’s yours it seems
Maybe this could revive your bank balance. Remember, everybody dreams Joe , if you can look inside yourself, you can look inside anyone
Customers? There are so many, one can’t count them
What’s the population of the world?
Almost two billion. A potential of two billion customers
All with a dream to untangle
You’ve figured out a new angle
Get it? Dreams on the instalment plan!
You’ll be in the money man!
It’s a miracle – just as you were a complete bust
Re-adjust!
Wait ‘til you’re in the chips
Then watch the dream girl warm up those chilly lips!
Get on the phone
Make a small financial loan
Convert this tomb into a consultation room
And go into business on your own!"

STEPHEN:
"It's finally done. Phew!"

Stephen, will you be doing any gigs in London next month? I'll there through 18th-23rd. Am I in any luck?

clerkenwell kid said...

hi stella

i've been travelling so I just got this.

yes, we just confirmed we are playing with Sophie Solomon at the Finchley Arts Depot on 22 October

http://www.artsdepot.co.uk/event_details.php?sectionid=music&eventid=283&searchid=current

hope to see you there!

Thanks, Stephen! I'll have to consult my friends, if they want to/can afford to go. I also have to think about my budget, but I'm very much hoping I'll be able to come and see you guys perform!

clerkenwell kid said...

yes it's expensive - we're doing it for Sophie who is very sweetly coming to Russia to play with us next week - it's her show

We hope to have another London show before the end of the year although officially I'm locked in the studio - and not to be let out without supervision.....

paulo said...

Ooh, that is a bit expensive. Would love to see some Real Tuesday Weld live action again, but will probably pass on it. Hope the studio work goes well, am very eager for a new TRTW album. Is your Brazil cover still not going to see the light of day (other than video form)?

kid,

i WAS going to offer to help you escape from the studio...like maybe by pointing at something and screaming "SWEET JESUS!! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!?!?"...giving you a chance to make a run for it. BUT..then i remembered that i WANT you in the studio making lovely new things and changed my mind. sorry.

cheers,
nell

Paulo

we're really trying to get that to happen - i'm just working on a track for a covers album at the moment - the choice would be between 'Brazil', 'The day before you came' by ABBA or 'I'll see you in my dreams'....

the new record is approaching completion

we will be sneaking things out regulary through the myspace site - remixes and unreleased tracks in the meantime

.................................................................................

Nell

You know I appreciate that!
There's all sorts of funny things going on in here...

best

thank you for feeding my tuesday weld monkey through myspace. i will keep my sharpest eye out for new tunes. is the new album the les chansons anglaise you teased us with?

cheers,
nell
ps
funny ha ha or funny peculiar?

Ta for the reply, for some reason my next response never appeared. Anyway, I hope that Brazil is the one picked, just cuz it's pretty darn great. & Arcade Fire have done a cool cover of it, and I hear that Beirut are covering it live, which just adds to its greatness. Must hear the original sometime.
I have a copy of your Abba cover you stuck up on your website many moons ago, but not heard that third cover. Hope the other bands on the compilation are good too.

Ooh, and I've finally uploaded to youtube a video of you guys performing Dreaming Of You at the Corsica Arts Club. Not amazing quality but still pretty good.

i'm recording two albums and 'les chansons anglais' is one of them. i think we will making that one available through the website only in the new year - or just giving it away for absolutley free - go ahead 'download my ass' as a friend of mine sad....

clerkenwell kid said...

paulo

hey thanks for this - i remember that show - it wasn't you that won the prize was it?

paulo said...

Nope, wasn't me, that was some chap to our left somewhere. But you did write me a story (amongst my other stories on my blog thing) at the Whitechapel gallery gig, which is prize enough- which was the first time we saw you, and another free gig too. & the Tracy leaving show as well, that's three free gigs we've been to. You need to have more gigs where you take money from us (especially with this free album talk)! Although two new albums is pretty exciting.

nell said...

well that made me all sorts of extra special happy. gonna go do a silly lil' monkey dance now. please look away....

cheers,
